If you’ve spent any time in Orlando or Central Florida, you already know how intense the sun, humidity, and heat can be—especially when it comes to your hair. As someone who works with hair every day in this climate, I know exactly how frustrating it is to invest in a beautiful color or fresh cut, only to have it affected by the weather—or the water—just days later.
Whether you’re a local client or visiting from out of state, my goal is to help you protect your hair and keep your color looking vibrant, healthy, and long-lasting—no matter what Florida throws your way.
Here’s what I recommend to help you protect your hair from the elements and the environment here in Central Florida.
Why Florida Weather Can Wreck Your Hair
Between the UV exposure, high humidity, frequent rain, chlorine, and hard water, your hair is constantly under pressure. If you're noticing:
Color fading too fast
Frizz that won’t quit
Split ends or breakage
Dry, dull texture
Hair that feels brittle after showering
You're definitely not alone. These are some of the most common concerns I help clients address right here at my Downtown Orlando studio.
My Go-To Tips for Protecting Hair in Orlando
Use a UV-Protecting Leave-In
If you're going to be outdoors (and let’s be honest, in Florida, you always are), I highly recommend a leave-in conditioner with UV protection. It helps prevent color from fading and keeps your hair hydrated when you’re out in the sun.
Wash Less Often—But With the Right Products
Try to limit washing your hair to 2–3 times a week. When you do wash, stick to sulfate-free, color-safe products, and rinse with cooler water. Hot water will open the cuticle and let color (and moisture) slip away faster.
If you're not sure what products are best for your hair type and treatment history, I can help customize a regimen for you.
Install a Shower Head Filter
Here’s a tip that most people overlook: Florida has hard water, and it can absolutely wreck your hair. Minerals like chlorine, calcium, and magnesium build up on your strands, causing dryness, dullness, and even faster color fading.
I always recommend installing a shower head filter—especially if you've invested in hair color, keratin, bonding treatments, or extensions. A good filter helps remove those harsh minerals and protects your hair from daily buildup. It makes a huge difference in how your hair feels and behaves after every wash.
Need a product suggestion? I’m happy to recommend a few that my clients love and that work well with Central Florida’s water.
Use Weekly Treatments to Rebuild and Hydrate
Between the heat and hard water, your hair needs extra love. I suggest using a deep conditioning or bond-repair treatment at least once a week. In the studio, I offer in-salon treatments that hydrate, smooth, and help lock in color between appointments.
Protect Your Hair at the Pool and Beach
If you're hitting the pool, beach, or a water park, always prep your hair with a leave-in conditioner or protective spraybeforehand—and rinse thoroughly afterward. Saltwater and chlorine are major culprits when it comes to color fading and damage, especially for blondes or anyone with recent color.
If you’ve had bonding, keratin, or extension work, this step is essential for longevity.
Go Easy on the Heat Tools
High heat plus Florida humidity is a recipe for split ends and fried hair. I can help you find a style or cut that air-dries beautifully, so you don’t have to rely on curling wands or flat irons every day. And when you do style, make sure to use a heat protectant to minimize damage.
Don’t Forget Seasonal Maintenance
In this climate, your hair needs regular TLC. I recommend a trim every 8–12 weeks, and a gloss or toner refresh in between color services to keep your hair vibrant and polished. These small touch-ups can help you avoid major issues later.
At my Downtown Orlando salon, I offer:
Custom cuts and styling for Florida weather
Hair color tailored for sun and water exposure
